Is this the end of the site?

The site will probably be deleted within the next month or so - unless we do something about it now!

Is this the end of the site?

Postby tonydav » Wed May 11, 2005 11:24 am

Bad news, I'm afraid.

Although the statistics show that site visits are way above the 50 per month requirement, I have just received the following email:-
Dear Anthony Davenport,

Your site achieved 3 page impressions in the last 30 days.

As you know, Tripod now requires a minimum amount of 50 page impressions a month to keep your free Tripod account online, this is to ensure that Tripod users can continue to take advantage of Lycos free hosting and to keep the best quality of service possible for all its webmasters.

Save your website now - don't loose it!

If you wish to continue to use Tripod freely, you need to increase your page impressions. A new check of your account will be done again in 30 days. If by then, you have succeeded in increasing your pages impressions, you will be able to continue to use Tripod freely. If in 30 days your page impressions have not increased, unfortunately we will be forced to close you site. However, we will give you 15 days to migrate your website before your Tripod account termination.

To help you increase your page impressions Lycos Tripod have compiled some tips for you:

Best regards,

Reading the various Lycos forums, other users are receiving the same threat.
It may be a stats error on Lycos's part - or a cynical ploy to force users to move to a paid for service. Either way there is very little time to decide what to do before the site is deleted.

The most straightforward way would be to transfer the site (a simple process I'm told ;-), which would also get rid of the annoying advert frame) to a Lycos paid for server but this would cost in the region of ?60 per annum (pricing structure not too clear at first glance & difficult to contact them by phone). Eventually got to speak to Lycos - no phone contact possible to Tripod (the free hosting service).

There is a conversion deal which would cost circa ?25 for the first year (but would be ?60 p.a. for subsequent years).

I'm reasonably happy to foot the bill for year one but not for subsequent years (although I'm willing to contribute, as a poor, starving pensioner ;-).

I need your views a.s.a.p. if the site is to continue.

14:15 I've just made a small change to the home page (a "LYCOS SYSTEM & then ADVANCED STATS" icon now appears briefly in the top left corner of the screen on the homepage before being obscured by the form pic). Hopefully, this will fix the inaccurate statistics (but I wouldn't bet on it). I won't know until tomorrow whether it works.

I'll be in touch.

Good News / Bad news

Postby tonydav » Sun May 15, 2005 1:06 pm

Apologies in advance for the lengthy post.

The good news:-

The code I've added has increased the hits slightly from zero (still way under the actual number of hits shown by the external counter).

Bad news:-

There are two sets of Lycos stats - Lycos Statistics & Lycos Internal Reporting.

The Internal Reporting still shows very low stats - could be borderline enough/not enough.

There is an view (unsubstantiated) that this counter is based on clicking the Ads on the right side of the screen (would make sense, as that's how Lycos make their money). Might be worth a few clicks on them when visiting the site.

Good news:-

A handfull(literally) of members have kindly offered to make a contribution.

Bad news:-

The total response so far to my mass email is also just a handfull (again, literally) of replies

I said earlier that I was willing to stand the year one cost of switching to a paid Lycos server (although, on reflection, in spite of Lycos assuring me that there is a one click means of moving the site, I would almost certainly have to manually amend any post which directly referenced a photo - must be at least 150-200 of them). I am still willing to do this but need some more response that this is worth while (I do have other things to do).

My preferred route therefore is to stay as we are, hope that we get sufficient hits to keep the site alive (bearing in mind my comments re Lycos above). The problem with this approach is that, if the next monthly stats are too low, I will have very little time to commit to a paid server & transfer the site.

Sorry to go on at length but I need some more feedback than I'm getting at present.

I'll also mass email this.

Here's a copy of the mass email I've just sent to all registered members:-

Hi all,

More boring details to wade through - sorry about that but not much time left.

No good news I'm afraid.
If Lycos use their Internal Stats as the counter (which I think they do), we are still way under the required 50 page impressions per month - even though the Statcounter stats show numbers far in excess of what's needed.
I think that, in spite of the changes Ive made, we will still be closed down in mid-June (which is why I'm sending this now - I will then have no mass mailing facilty).

Worse, the offer that would have given us the first 12 months for circa ?28 followed by ? 4.99 per month has now been replaced by 3 months free & then ?6.99 per month (I've phoned & been promised an exact cost but no email has arrived - fairly typical), so first year cost will be around ?65, which I'll have to pay to get us started & then circa ?84 per year - less than ?1 each if we all contributed ;-)).

Moving to another Host is an option, but for technical reasons could involve a lot of effort (even more than will be needed to stay with Lycos) & would probably be no cheaper. I have decided therefore to transfer the site to the Lycos paid option before the CGSOB site database is deleted (which would be end of story as far as I'm concerned).

Ok, now for the bit I hate - talking about money!

Several members (12 I think - although we do have around 90 registered members) have already kindly offered to contribute various amounts, which I greatly appreciate. I'm not keen on mailing my bank account details in this mass email ( at least a couple of Viagra sellers have registered at the site) so, if anyone wants to use electronic transfer, pleae email me & I'll then send you my details individually).

I'm happy to continue to keep the site alive (the transfer to paid site will probably involve a fair amount of effort on my part) & pay my share (the Lycos payments will be coming out of my credit card!) but need to share the cost.

So, if you want the site to continue, I need to hear from you soon.

Apologies for going on at length.

For any new visitors (we've had a few join recently), the new, paid-for site is up & running ok without the annoying advertising frame (& has been (sounds a bit like me  ) since the beginning of June 2005).

My thanks again to all those who contributed - I'll be publishing a full list of contributors in due course.

In case anyone is wondering why my name is not on the list, calls to Lycos support during the switchover cost me around ?15, I've paid for the CGSOB domain name for the last 3 years or so (another ?12 I think) plus the 5 old school photos I had to pay a tenner (outrageous!) for from Manchester City Council, not to menion numerous other incidentals which have occurred during the last 3 years. Hopefully, I will be seen as having paid my whack

I'll copy this to the "The New Server.... forum for completeness.
